The Protected Species Observer’s primary responsibility is to ensure that the project’s mitigation measures are followed. PSOs will document and generate reports on the project’s compliance requirements, as well as serve as a source of information on marine animals and other environmental issues. During operations that involve mitigation measures and reporting, they are responsible, impartial, and unbiased. PSOs perform a variety of monitoring tasks, including standard visual monitoring, passive and active acoustic monitoring, airborne surveys, dirigible and ROV surveys, and more. Although the majority of PSOs focus on marine mammals and sea turtles, they also deal with a variety of other wildlife such as birds and fish.
